When I started my blog I read as much as I could about how to start a blog for beginners. And post after post told me to sing up for hosting, download WordPress, write a bunch of posts, put ads on my site and Voila! That was it. Not only would I have a great blog, but I’d be raking in the dough in no time.
Excuse me while I take a minute to laugh.
That couldn’t have been further from the truth. It took sooooooooo much more work. Hours upon hours of research because I didn’t know how to do anything. Nothing. I had no clue what I was doing.
As I got going one thing I noticed was that a lot of bloggers talk about how to start a blog. But they don’t really talk about how to start a blog. You know what I mean? Like, they give all the stereotypical advice: “choose a niche” and “get hosting” but they don’t talk about all the nitty gritty. All that behind the scenes stuff that will keep you up at night watching Youtube videos.
Like how the heck does everyone get that little button over their images that links to Pinterest? That doesn’t just happen. But when I read blogs about how to start a blog nobody talked about that. Nobody talks about how you’ll have to mess around for hours to get your site looking like it wasn’t built by a 10-year-old.
I was lost.
And frustrated. And honestly a little mad at all of those bloggers who made it sound so easy. I thought I was going to be making BIG money by now.
And if I’m really honest, when I look back it kind of feels like all of those bloggers intentionally left out all of that other stuff. Who knows why. Maybe they didn’t want the competition or maybe it wasn’t that hard for them. But it was for me, and I know I’m not the only one who has struggled.
Now I’m going to walk you through exactly what to do, step-by-step. I’m going to fill in all the blanks that the other bloggers leave out and I’m going to share with you my top tips for how to start a blog for beginners.

My Experience as a New Blogger
When someone suggested to me to start my own blog I didn’t even really know what a blog was!! Haha, truth be told, I didn’t even realize that all those articles I pinned and read on Pinterest were blogs! I don’t know what I thought they were, but I definitely did not think they were blogs.
And all those recipe sites that I follow? Yeah, all blogs!! Who knew?! I can’t believe I was so clueless about this, but I’m an educator by trade and blogging wasn’t exactly part of teacher training 101.
As I’m sure you can imagine, when I finally started Forgotten Lattes I had A LOT to learn. Like a lot, a lot. It was like learning another language. Literally. I would read all these how-to’s and tutorials and they would use words I’d never heard of.
Plugin? Caching? Code? Yikes!!
So I’d have to google those just so I could understand the tutorial.
But with a little perseverance I learned more and more every day. Now, one year later I’m not an expert by any means but I do know a thing or two. And I have a list as long as my arm of all the stuff I’d wish I’d known a year ago.
Now I’m going to save you all the trouble I went through by sharing all that stuff that nobody else will. Here’s a beginner’s guide to blogging from a someone who started a blog with no clue what to do!!
How to Start a Mom Blog for Beginners
Sign-Up for Hosting: Yes, this is going to cost you. If you want to make money with your blog or you think you might ever want to monetize your blog then you need to be self-hosted.
I use Bluehost. I have been very happy with my experience and the support is wonderful. I have found the platform easy to use and I like that you can upgrade as your blog traffic increases.
Get your hosting set up and then pat yourself on the back! You just took the first step in starting your blog. Congratulations!!!
Download WordPress: WordPress is the program that will allow you to actually write your posts. It’s very easy to use, which is good because who has time to sit around and figure out all these new programs?!
From here you’ll see a lot of other bloggers tell you to apply for an ad program, download a theme, write like crazy, and then you’ll have a successful blog. But there’s a lot more behind the scenes work that needs to happen. And yes, there is an ideal order to do it all. Or at least I think so.
I had no idea about any of this, and I fell victim to the idea that for very little work I was going to start making a full-time income quickly. And that just wasn’t true.
But it turns out that I love blogging.
And once I got my ducks in a row and got serious — and consistent — with my blog, guess what happened? My traffic took off and it’s growing more and more every day. And now, after a year of fumbling around and making mistakes, I’m finally seeing the fruits of my labor.
But my goal isn’t just to set you up with hosting and get a commission (although I do get a commission) and then leave you hanging. I want to help you by saving you all the time I wasted researching and watching YouTube videos at 2 am. I want you be more successful as a new blogger. So I’m going to help you by telling exactly what I should have done when I was in your shoes.
I’ve spent lots of time reflecting on what I wish I would have known, what I wish I would have done, and I’ve laid out a plan for you. This plan is exactly what I wish I would have differently and if I had I have absolutely no doubt I would have been far more successful earlier on.
Do you plan to start a blog? Leave a comment and tell me what you’ll be writing about! Or if you’re still on the fence tell me what’s holding you back!
