If you find yourself reaching for your phone first thing in the morning, try leaving it across the room or in another room entirely.
A few months ago I began leaving my phone in the kitchen overnight. I placed a charger in the corner by the coffee pot and the charger lives there. My phone gets plugged in at night and stays in the kitchen.
If there’s an emergency overnight I know exactly where my phone is, and it’s charged. I broke the habit of scrolling social media and other apps within about two weeks. I no longer crave it. At least not first thing in the morning.
I purchased a small, analog alarm clock for my bed side table and a small flashlight in case I need to get up in the middle of the night and tend to children.
My mornings now begin with prayer and Scripture reading in bed. When my children wake they come and snuggle, then we begin our day together.
I’m more patient and focused in the morning. Probably because I’m not irritable because they interrupted my scrolling. There’s no scrolling to interrupt. My thoughts stay on homemaking and homeschooling. I’m more productive, creative, and a better steward of my time.
When I do scroll social media it’s in the afternoon during our daily quiet time. It truly feels like a break instead of something that rules my day. I’m no longer feel like a slave to my phone and its apps.
Try this for one week and see if it makes a positive difference for you!
