If you were to search for a morning routine for a stay-at-home mom you’d find no shortage of posts and influencer videos touting the benefits of rising early.
“Rise and grind,” they say.
Get up early (before the kids, sometimes before the crack of dawn) and do all the things.
Read your Bible.
Workout.
Shower & get ready.
Make breakfast.
Knit a sweater.
Live an entire day before your little one even stirs from his sleep.
And if this works for you than good for you! I mean without an ounce of sarcasm or insincerity. In so many way I envy mothers who are early risers, because two hours to do things I want, in a quiet house, sounds absolutely divine.
But alas, mornings and I have never gotten along. And no matter how many times I try to wake before my kids, it’s never been a routine with sticking power.
Instead of rise and grind, my days begin with my kids waking me up. Lots of snuggles, a quick Scripture reading while the kids play. Then it’s breakfast, feeding animals, and a slow morning of independent play for the kids while I linger over my coffee.
The rising is there, if reluctantly. There’s no grinding, unless you count the espresso beans. But it’s what works for us in our home and keeps our days peaceful.
And that’s the sticking point, isn’t it? It’s all about what works for you and your family.
